Modern Winchester

In the first of a quartet of posts about Winchester, England – here is Modern Winchester.

Winchester is easily reached by car with a park and ride area or train which is close to the centre. The shops are  a mix of independent and chain with a penchant for being upscale, I particularly liked seeing the promotion of their independent stores something we English are enjoying seeing the rebirth of as our towns have become either cloned or dead with the advent of out of town shopping centres and malls.

I arrived by train so the walk slopes down into the city and takes you past the library which currently offers an exhibition ‘Love Thy Denim’ a tribute to the cloth, its history and designers who used it. They update the exhibitions there so check online for what’s on now.

I fell in love with the arty bollards decorating the area leading to the cathedral, I imagine they have been sponsored by local businesses and a suitable picture decorates the bollard. I particularly liked a coastal scene and The Mona Lisa, I hope they are a permanent fixture and not a temporary one. They were definitely a talking point for visitors and something of interest to children who were keen to see what the next one had in store.

There are plenty of  coffee shops offering a decent cup, I went into a recently opened CoffeeLab in St Thomas Street decorated in an urban meets utilitarian mode and was not disappointed…….flashy pattern on the cappuccino always impresses!

With ‘environment friendly’ being on most political agendas I was impressed with the current initiative called IncredibleEdibleWinchester. Vegetable and herb boxes can be found on the train station platform offering travellers the chance to pick some veg or herbs to take home and try. I would love to hear from anyone who has done just that….I think its a great idea.

Look out for Historic Winchester, Pretty Winchester and Vintage Winchester photo blogs coming soon.
